Wimems Corporation Bhd has developed a Malaysian designed and manufactured
wireless broadband solution named WiFLEX, a standards-based wireless technology
that provides high-throughput broadband connections over long distances.
Its executive chairman Fong Piau said the company was currently negotiating with a local telecommunications company to implement a network within the country.
"Our successful trials in Europe on network architecture that encompassed point-to point backhaul and multipoint delivery are providing good case studies as we develop this possible implementation:, he said in a statement on Oct 17.
He said the impending award of the WiMAX spectrum by the government was expected
to propel the demand for WiFLEX, which was expected to contribute positively towards Wimems 2007 turnover figures.
Fong said WiFLEX's competitive advantage lies in its numerous proprietary
enhancements that enable better performance and cost effective expansion.
"This differentiates WiFLEX from other standards-based solutions and it is aimed at providing highly efficient last mile and backhaul network solutions as well as diversity of applications ranging from Telcos implementation to corporate, SMEs and SOHOs", he said.
He said WiFLEX was designed and developed by its subsidiary Flex-P Industries Sdn Bhd at its research and development Centre in Penang. It is designed for both static and mobile applications under the IEEE 802.16 2004-2005 recommendations.
To allow for maximum flexibility, WiFLEX is capable of operating in both licensed and license-exempt bands with frequencies ranging from 1.0GHz to 6GHz, said Fong.
Wimems has spent RM1.3 million on its R&D efforts.
Fong said the product would initially be targeted at the domestic market and later at international markets such as Asia and the Middle East.
He added WiFLEX further broadened its existing range of wireless products such as WLAN AP, VOIP and video conferencing AP.
